Wi-Fi Dangers?

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

You know… I see and read some strange information but most of the time I am reading about the things that are known like, say, security threats from using wireless internet connections and the ease at which such things are broken these days. Today, just a few moments ago really, I came across this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6583815.stm

Students at Canada’s Lakehead University have to be careful how they connect to the internet because wi-fi is banned on large parts of the campus.

University president Fred Gilbert, whose academic interests include wildlife management, environmental studies and natural resources science, is worried about the health impact of the 2.4Ghz radio waves used by wireless networks

I am not sure what to say, think, or respond to this as this is mostly a technically oriented site and this is surely not my forté but… I will ponder this:

Do they plan on banning cell phones, radios, cordless phones, or?

Coffee’s 25 Killer Apps

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Here is a writer that I have great respect for. He is one of the last remaining journalists. Well, most of the time… His topics are clear and unblinded by zealotry (is that a word?) and he doesn’t delve into the political muck that you see his peers doing.

We all, by now, know my fondness for Top Ten Lists. I like all of them - even if I don’t like them because, even if I don’t like them, they’ll be over shortly. Mostly I like the format, the content is easy to find, and I guess I am most fond of this time of year because this is when everyone comes out with their Top Ten Lists.

Peter Coffee’s 25 Killer Apps of All Time

There are a couple of Microsoft products on there, I’d argue that Windows XP should be on the list actually. As a whole it was far more innovative (and if used properly quite secure) than we often give credit for. With Firefox being rather bland and, truthfully, nothing new really I might have considered swapping that out for XP but it wasn’t my list and I have a hard time disagreeing with anything else on his list.

I do hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Take the slide show, you were only wasting time anyhow.

Bill Gates for President!

Friday, December 1st, 2006

This is not meant to dive into the realm of politics and thus is mostly here to entertain.

Why not? Well… at Bill Gates for President!

I did read some of the comments. This one entertained me due to the idealism:

Would I vote for him? Almost certainly not, because of the first two cons. It would take an opponent as distasteful as Bush for me to consider it.

Since when was voting actually a matter of voting for someone or something. ;) Usually it seems to be about voting against someone or something. That’s why negative ads work, the true idealists don’t do well in politics, and how we’ve managed to have the results we have had.

I’d vote for Bill for president but he’d have to start calling himself William, he’s not charismatic enough to be a Bill like Clinton was. I’d vote for him because I admire his work, his ideals, and his solutions for the problems he’s been known to face.

On the other hand I have my doubts as to the legitimacy of the idea. I simply don’t think he’d run for president at this time. Money is more power than presidency, and he’s already got plenty of that. Either way, it is better than “Archie Bunker for President.”

Something on the Lighter Side

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Finally, something that is akin to good news to some of you perhaps. Hopefully you’ll find this less depressing then the usual stuff seen here.

This year’s $398 Wal-Mart laptop comes with a 15.4-inch screen, a 3300+ Sempron processor from Advanced Micro Devices that churns at 2.0GHz, a 60GB hard drive and 512MB of memory. It’s beefed up from last year’s $398 notebook, which had a 15-inch screen, a 40GB drive and 256GB of memory.

Wal-Mart kicks off holiday season with $398 laptop.
