Mouse Rage Syndrome?

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

A phenomenon as monumental as the Internet should have an ailment of its own. Indeed, the Web appears to be breeding its very own disease, a medical syndrome recognizable by a quickening of the heart, profuse sweating, and furious clicking and bashing of the mouse. In extreme cases, the ailment can be identified by loud screaming at video screens.

EETimes.com - Are you suffering from ‘Mouse Rage Syndrome?

This is a little old but entertaining still. It is the first I’ve actually seen it with a name attached but I’ve still not found a name for the little balls of junk that accumulate on the top of a mouse. Anyhow, it is worth reading and thinking about. Maybe, just maybe, if you’re work or life depends on what you’re doing online then I could see getting frustrated but most people aren’t and so I can’t see why someone would get a site designer (and a poor one at that) the power to control their actions. Silly people.

Coffee’s 25 Killer Apps

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Here is a writer that I have great respect for. He is one of the last remaining journalists. Well, most of the time… His topics are clear and unblinded by zealotry (is that a word?) and he doesn’t delve into the political muck that you see his peers doing.

We all, by now, know my fondness for Top Ten Lists. I like all of them - even if I don’t like them because, even if I don’t like them, they’ll be over shortly. Mostly I like the format, the content is easy to find, and I guess I am most fond of this time of year because this is when everyone comes out with their Top Ten Lists.

Peter Coffee’s 25 Killer Apps of All Time

There are a couple of Microsoft products on there, I’d argue that Windows XP should be on the list actually. As a whole it was far more innovative (and if used properly quite secure) than we often give credit for. With Firefox being rather bland and, truthfully, nothing new really I might have considered swapping that out for XP but it wasn’t my list and I have a hard time disagreeing with anything else on his list.

I do hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Take the slide show, you were only wasting time anyhow.

Google Press Center: Zeitgeist

This isn’t technically available nor listed on the press page but the URL is just like it is every other year so, well, here is this year’s listing.

Google Press Center: Zeitgeist

I do like searches done from Google most of the time. Everything else is pretty evil in one way or another. I like presenting their ads but, for the most part, from the other side of their ad market you get your money stolen and don’t get nearly the results you can get with other ad companies.

Anyhow, the rest of Google is pretty evil but search isn’t too bad. (Kind of funny considering they say “do no evil” but, well, who are they fooling? They’re just another faceless corporation blinded by greed and success.)

Those are the most popular searched done in those categories. I guess I feel left out because I didn’t search for a single one of those things.

Al Shugart has Died

Disk drive pioneer Al Shugart dies

In a relatively young industry such as personal computers, it is unusual to hear of the death of any of its major figures. So it came as a shock to hear about the passing of Al Shugart, one of the leading pioneers in the field of disk drives. He was 76.

Shugart was born in Los Angeles and started his computer career as many others did at the time, working for industry giant IBM. He quickly rose to the position of Direct Access Storage Product Manager, in charge of IBM’s disk drive products—IBM was an innovator in hard drive technology at the time. In 1961, he helped IBM create the world’s first hard drive, the Advanced Disk File, which later became known as the IBM 1301.

I will not add much more to this other than to say I’m just now learning about this and that it is a great loss. Our thoughts and mindshare are extended to his family and friends during this time.
