Adobe Flash Ads Security Flaw

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It seems that a new security problem has come up that users of Windows, Macs, and Linux should be aware of.

See this link at ZDNet for more information.

Malicious hackers are using booby-trapped Flash banner ads to hijack clipboards for use in rogue security software attacks.

In the Web attacks, which target Mac, Windows and Linux users running Firefox, IE and Safari, hackers are seizing control of the machine’s clipboard and using a hard-to-delete URL that points to a fake anti-virus program.

While I am not entirely sure what the effect of a “fake anti-virus program” would be for either Mac or Linux users (probably nothing) that isn’t the only likely potential with this.

So, to all of the faithful three and a half readers of this site… I’d recommend you remain alert and, of course, browse the web as securely as you can. Blocking those ads at this time would be a good idea.

Update: I’m not sure why ZDNet had this on their front page as new news. I looked again and noticed that the date was over a month ago. The same principle applies. Browse as securely as possible and a new caveat is, “Check the dates before you post something.”

It seems that this has been delayed and that doesn’t actually seem to bother too many people. If you’re a Mac user and/or are curious you can see some screenshots here:

SEC Clears Apple

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007
The SEC has issued an official statement that effectively wipes the slate clean for Apple and its problematic stock option grants, saying that the company’s eagerness to make amends left little reason to consider punishment.

Well, seems that anyone can break the law and get away with it - if they have enough fanboys.

A job for Jobs?

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

“Apple Computer Inc. on Friday cleared Chief Executive Steve Jobs of wrongdoing regarding its improper handling of stock options, but new details from an internal investigation only fueled controversy.

The company revealed that Jobs “was aware or recommended” the selection of favorable dates for stock options awarded to other executives, although he didn’t personally profit or “appreciate the accounting implications” of the practice, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Previously, the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant said only that Jobs had been aware of the backdating but didn’t personally benefit from it.”

Apple report fails to end stock-option controvesy [sic] - Los Angeles Times

I’ve avoided touching on the subject because, well, I’ll seem too contrary but, frankly - guilty as charged. Now, when will the media and public opinion not drive the Justice Department and SEC? That’s an even more interesting question…

By the way, I’m not sure how “controvesy” made it past their editors… *sighs* They type like me. I, on the other hand, use a spell check.
